Too many times we can overwhelm ourselves by taking in too many details like hair and other textures, but if you ignore those and learn to see the structure underneath the details, drawing becomes much easier. Remember kindergarten? That’s where you learned this first lesson, but just in case you forgot here it is again:

Let’s take this idea to the next level. Look a Rhino! (Hey! I heard that, stop freaking out) notice all the basic shapes? Now he’s not so scary.

Here’s my rendition, notice I drew his shapes in lightly so that when I get ready I can fill out the sketch. He’s a little rough, it’s been a while since I attempted a realistic drawing so we’re kind of in this together.

The whole point of this exercise is to show you how to see with new eyes. Look around and you’ll start seeing shapes in everything. Have a stab at the rhino and feel free to send me your drawing
